So, yesterday, I was so excited to shadow a naturopathic physician. I must say, I was very disappointed on the visit and I will share that experience with you all: So, I put one one of my finest suits and googled some questions I would like to ask her. We took the GPS and found the place. It was a nice little place, looked like a small clinic/house. It had a lot of fall flowers and frees growing near the steps and the perimeters of the building. So, I've opened the door and the doctor was there to great me. I thanked her for this wonderful and exciting opportunity to shadow her. She was small, petite, and looked around the age of forty. Pretty shy and soft-spoken woman. She wasn't really what I expected when I've sent her a series of emails and checked her Facebook page. So, she worked with three other healthcare providers. The rooms had promise, somewhere. They were super messy and smelled like incense and food. After we finished looking in other people's rooms, I saw her room. She had nothing but an examining bed, with a towel over it, an old desk with not too much literature on it, curtains, some pictures an a hanging figurine. It was very cold and boring then out of nowhere, she told me that she had a rat problem! So, a patient came. I was SO looking forward to what she did and her scope of practice. She asked her patient whether I can watch since I am a student. The patient said "No, I am having a bad day". I understand patient confidentiality so I accept her rejection. I was still very disappointed That was the main purpose why I was there. It's one thing reading online but it's another looking at a real life physician practice. So, I went into the rat welcomed room and read the tiny literature she had. An hour went by and the exterminator came and asked me questions and went outside. When she was done, she was apologizing and said she had more patients later on. I said, "Great!". So, the chiropractor came and talked about networking with the naturopathic physicians. It was fun and exciting talking to her because I didn't know they as chiropractors had some of the same restrictions as naturopaths in NYS. My naturopath opened up and said that she wasn't happy there, she wanted to move, she was struggling, the massage therapist there deter patients from her, etc. It was discouraging a bit, but does not deter me from pursing naturopathic medicine. Also, what really turned me off was that she asked whether the chiropractor had room and if she can come and see the place. She wanted me to come with but I had other "plans". Come on. I did not take off work for this but to shadow so I found that to be kinda rude. Anyways, it was an opportunity for me to ask questions. I didn't ask many because another patient ranged the doorbell. She asked this patient and he said no. At this point, I was not going to wait until 5 or 3pm to see if a patient would want me there. I am not wasting my time so I thanked her and left. It's not her fault. I just didn't want to stay in that cold gross room. It's one thing if it was a nice, clean, cozy office with various of literature and a computer but no. Nothing in there was entertaining so I thanked her and left. I went online and did more extensive research. Just because her business was not too successful, doesn't mean mines won't because it will. I am still looking forward to going into Naturopathic medicine! :)
